Drill beat maker: written at 140, felt at 70
Drill's trick is arithmetic. The tempo says 140 but the snare only lands on beat 3, so the pulse halves and a hole opens in the middle of every bar. The sliding 808 lives in that hole - one bass note bending into another so the low end moves instead of thudding. This page opens with all of it already running.
Sliding the 808
Play 808 SLIDE and then a pitch pad on the very next 16th. Because the first note is still ringing, the two read as one note bending - that glide is what people mean by a drill bass line, and it is a performance rather than a setting. The pitch pads are tuned to a minor triad, so any pair of them slides somewhere musical.
How to program it
- Snare on beat 3 only. Programming it on 2 and 4 as well turns drill back into trap - the whole feel depends on waiting twice as long as you expect. If a bar feels empty, add a rim on the 'a' before the snare rather than another snare.
- Use the three 808 pads as one instrument. Play SLIDE into a pitch pad on the very next 16th and the bend reads as one continuous note moving; that glide is what people mean by a drill bass line. Never let the 808 land on the same step as the kick or you lose both.
- Hats want triplets. Put a run of three inside one beat - the 8T or 16T repeat rate does it in one hold - then leave the following beat almost bare. Constant 16ths sound like trap; drill hats stutter and stop.
- Keep everything else out of the way. One dark bell figure and one string stab per two bars is a full arrangement here. Drill is quiet music with a loud bottom end.
- Try 138-142 BPM before anything else. The genre sits in a very narrow window and the half-time feel falls apart on either side of it.
Hats that stutter
Hold a hat pad with REPEAT on and set the rate to 8T or 16T: that is a triplet run inside one beat, played rather than drawn. Do it on one beat and leave the next almost bare. Even 16ths belong to trap; drill hats hesitate.
