Phonk beat maker: the cowbell plays the tune
Phonk is Memphis rap through a blown speaker. The cowbell is not percussion here - it carries the melody, a short figure across three or four pitches that the whole track hangs from. Underneath sits an 808 driven hard enough to distort, and a kit already running through saturation, bit crushing and tape wear.
Write the cowbell first
Four cowbell pads are tuned across a minor scale. A finished phonk hook is a four or five note phrase on those pads, repeated every bar with one note moved in the second - write it before you touch the drums, because if you program drums first there will be nowhere left for it to go.
How to get the sound
- Write the cowbell first and treat it as a melody, not a groove. Three pitches, a four or five note phrase, repeated every bar with one note changed in the second - that is a finished phonk hook. If you programme drums first you will leave no room for it.
- Drive the 808. Turn the pad's saturation up until the bass note has grit on the front of it; a clean sine sub reads as trap. The 808 should be loud enough to be uncomfortable and long enough to smear into the next hit.
- Keep the snare late and dry. One hit on beat 3 with a hard crack and almost no tail - the space around it is what makes 140 BPM feel slow and heavy.
- Hats in straight 16ths at low velocity with the occasional doubled 32nd. Phonk hats are a texture, not a performance; save the fast rolls for the last beat of a phrase.
- The whole kit already runs through crush and saturation, so program quieter than feels right. Everything gets louder and dirtier on the way out - if it clips at the pad it will be mud at the master.
